Lugol’s solution (premium-quality iodine drops – 5%)

Iodine (I) and potassium iodide (KI) are combined with distilled water to form Lugol’s solution, often known as Lugol’s iodine. Jean François Coindet (1774–1834) was the first to use iodine for therapeutic purposes.

The French physician Jean Guillaume Auguste Lugol first developed Lugol’s solution in 1829. Dr Lugol discovered that potassium iodide increases the solubility of iodine in water. Lugol’s solution is a mixture of iodine and potassium iodide in a ratio of 1:2. For many years, Lugol’s solution has been combined with other substances and used as a raw material for various purposes.

Every human tissue and organ contains traces of the element iodine. The highest concentrations of iodine are found in the thyroid gland, the major salivary glands, the pancreas, the lacrimal glands, reproductive tissues such as the breasts, ovaries and prostate, as well as in the gastric mucosa, cerebrospinal fluid and human skin.

It is essential for the production of thyroid hormones and the regulation of metabolism, which affects energy levels and mental clarity.

Interesting facts

In Slovenia, severe iodine deficiency has been observed in children and adults in the past, as most meals naturally contain only modest amounts of iodine.

Following the Chernobyl nuclear accident, Lugol’s solution was also used to protect people from radioactive radiation.

Finding iodine can be difficult, but many foods contain it in natural quantities. These include fish, pork, cheese, seaweed and kelp.

Today, iodine deficiency is a common problem. Iodine used to be commonly added to bread and baked goods, but now it is found only in a few types of salad. Iodine evaporates from salt – a fact that is less well known – and it is unclear how much of the evaporated iodine is actually absorbed by the body. The iodine content in the diet is limited due to soil depletion resulting from excessive and inappropriate land use.
