What is liquorice?

Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a perennial plant from the legume family, known for its characteristic sweet taste. Every year, the plant produces woody stems that grow to a height of one to two metres. Its root is most commonly used; it contains numerous active compounds, the best known of which is glycyrrhizin, which is as much as 50 times sweeter than sucrose (common sugar). The dried and ground root is used as liquorice root powder, which is popular in nutrition, natural medicine and cosmetics.

In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, it is used as a tonic to revitalise the heart and spleen, as well as to treat ulcers and skin problems. As it soothes a dry throat, it is often used by smokers, singers and public speakers.

It is also a common ingredient in dietary supplements and herbal formulations, where it acts as a binding agent between herbs and enhances their effects.

Storage and warnings

Store in a cool, dry place at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C. Keep this dietary supplement out of the reach of children!

Remember the importance of a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle; this dietary supplement is not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake or dose.

We do not recommend the consumption of liquorice by pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, children under 12 years of age, diabetics, people with high blood pressure and those with heart conditions.

Liquorice is beneficial even in small quantities, so do not overdo it. The maximum daily intake should be between 4 and 8 grams (that is, 1 to 2 teaspoons). Liquorice has a strong physiological effect (e.g. it can affect blood pressure), so it is recommended that you start with a lower dose (e.g. half a teaspoon) and check your body’s response; then, if necessary, increase the number of doses, but do not increase the amount all at once. Half a teaspoon is the optimal amount for one cup of tea (approx. 200–250 ml). A larger amount may be too strong, too thick or unpleasant to drink.

We advise against long-term use without breaks. It is best to take a break of at least two weeks after 4 to 6 weeks of use.

Liquorice root lowers blood potassium levels, so if you are taking it over a prolonged period, you should compensate for this through your diet (e.g. bananas, dried apricots, dates, spinach, Swiss chard, beans, lentils…).
