Schisandra is a small tree or vine that bears tiny red berries, which are highly prized in traditional Chinese medicine for their active ingredients. Schisandra is known as wu wei zi, which in Chinese means ‘the fruit of five flavours’, as the small red berries contain sweet, sour, salty, bitter and spicy flavours. These flavours correspond to the five fundamental energies: earth, wood, water, metal and fire, and influence the five most important organs of the human body – the heart, liver, lungs, spleen and kidneys.

Schisandra is one of the 50 traditional Chinese herbs that have been in use for over 2,000 years.
