Wild yam (Dioscorea polystachya) is a tall, climbing plant native to Central America. It has beautiful, heart-shaped green leaves, but its secret lies in its elongated root with a distinctly white, fleshy part. It is sometimes also known as Mexican wild yam or dioscorea.

Wild yam contains an oestrogen-like active ingredient (phytoestrogen) known as diosgenin. It is a completely natural compound that can compensate for a hormone deficiency in the body. A deficiency in progesterone most commonly occurs after the age of 30 or later during the menopause, and can also be a cause of premature menopause.

Diosgenin is chemically very similar to cholesterol, progesterone and the hormone DHEA. In the body, it mimics the action of the hormone progesterone and has a positive effect on hormonal balance.

Wild yam has been popular here for many years in the form of tablets and creams.
