Five spices

Five spices, or a blend of five spices, is a popular Asian blend. It is also known as Chinese spice mix. It is a sweet and spicy blend that is extremely versatile. This delicate yet extremely aromatic blend is based on the traditional principle of Yin and Yang – complementary opposites that together form a whole.

And although it is a blend of five spices, the name actually refers to five different flavours, namely sweet, sour, salty, pungent and bitter. According to traditional Chinese medicine, it stimulates all the organs, as it contains all five basic elements.

Usage

It is mainly used to enhance and season meat, such as duck, pork or goose, as well as chicken and seafood. It is also used to season rice, vegetables, stews, vegetarian and other dishes, such as burritos, cheese spreads and scrambled eggs. It is also used to season sauces and for marinades or gravies. This spice blend is traditionally used in Chinese cuisine, but it can also be used in unexpected ways, such as in cakes, biscuits or even pancakes. It gives dishes a subtle exotic touch.

Ingredients

Cloves, star anise, Sichuan pepper, cinnamon, fennel.

May contain traces of parsley and mustard.

Storage

Store in a dry, dark and cool place. Ensure the bag or box is tightly sealed.
